Composer Notes:

In this work I try to give musical representations of joyful shouts and jubilant song, the vast calm of the sea, mystical murmurs by rivers and mountains, and human hope in the "strong right arm" of the King of the universe. I am a melodic composer, and I try to use a supporting harmonic language that is interesting and challenging to the performers, yet accessible and comprehensible to listeners. In this piece I use some changing meter and some irregular rhythmic patterns to add interest and vitality; however, there are long sections in a single meter that concentrate on the melodic sweep of the text.

Conductor Notes:

Psalm 98 allows a choir to show its versatility, singing in lively changing meters, exuberant fanfares, soft, blended textures, and expansive melodic passages. It poses interesting challenges for the singers, which can be met easily with simple rehearsal techniques; the rewards for the choir and audience are great. A more than competent pianist is required; the piano is an important player in the work. (String quintet parts are also available.)

Text:

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation. The Lord has made his salvation known and has revealed his righteousness to the nations. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Make music to the Lord with the harp. Burst into jubilant song with music. Make music to the Lord with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn, shout for joy before the Lord, the King. Let the sea resound and all that is in it, the world and all who live in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity. (Sing to the Lord a new song.)
