Schola Cantorum on Hudson (SCH) will be offering a special commemoration through music of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. These events will be take place in both Manhattan and Montclair, NJ.

It has long been clear to the singing membership of SCH that it would be important to remember and commemorate the events of 9/11/2001 through music on its 10th anniversary. On September 23, 2001, SCH offered a musical context for communal grieving at St. Michael Church in Jersey City, which was then the ensemble’s performing home. The lengthy necrology, contributed by neighbor-commuters and recited over “America the Beautiful” in 2001, will be replaced on this ten-year anniversary by Montclair resident Penny Vance’s sharing of her experience as she looked for her commuting husband. Also included will be Amazing Grace and a setting of the Prayer of St. Francis. The focus will be on healing, even as we continue to remember and honor those lost.

We had no way of knowing, in September of 2001, that ten years later, SCH would have found a performing home at St. John’s in the Village, a mere block from St. Vincent's Hospital, which became the epicenter of response to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. What we knew then was that, overnight, our neighborhood in Jersey City had a drastically reduced number of people walking to the PATH station. What we feel today is gratitude for the opportunity, once again, of providing music through which to gather and journey together through this time of gripping recollection; and gratitude for our performing home so close to the location of the events we commemorate.

Immediately following SCH’s thirty-minute offering will be another series of performances and reflections as part of Montclair Remembers in the same space entitled 'Evening of Hope.’ A candlelight vigil will conclude the evening.
